Sustainable energy is no longer the future — it’s essential for our planet and our economy. This Diploma in Sustainable Energy Level 4 equips you with the knowledge and skills to understand and develop clean energy systems that can help tackle climate change. By completing this course, you will gain a deep awareness of how different renewable energy sources work and how they contribute to sustainable development. Graduates are well-prepared for roles in the rapidly growing green energy sector — for example, a renewable energy engineer in the UK typically earns around £44,434 per year (about £21/hour).

In this diploma, you begin with Module 01: An Introduction to Sustainable Energy, where you explore the fundamentals of energy systems, climate change, and energy policy. Module 02: Solar Energy: Thermal covers how solar thermal systems capture heat from the sun. Module 03: Solar Energy: Photovoltaics introduces photovoltaic (PV) technology for converting sunlight into electricity. Module 04: Wind Energy examines both onshore and offshore wind turbines and their engineering. Module 05: Bioenergy explains energy from biomass, biogas, and biofuels. Module 06: Geothermal Energy dives into extracting heat from the Earth’s subsurface. Module 07: Tidal Energy explores how tides and waves can be harnessed to generate power. In Module 08: Environmental Impacts, you assess the global and regional environmental effects of renewable energy. Module 09: Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development explores the social, economic, and policy dimensions of green energy. Finally, Module 10: The Future of Renewable Energy in the UK into the 2020s and Beyond looks at trends, challenges, and opportunities for the UK’s energy transition.

Course Curriculum

Module 01: An Introduction to Sustainable Energy

In module one, we will learn why sustainable energy matters so much in today’s world, and will explore the different sources of sustainable energy in detail. It also discusses the energy in a sustainable future.

Module 02: Solar Energy: Thermal

In module two, we will deepen our understanding of how solar energy heating systems work and take an in-depth look at solar thermal power plants.

Module 03: Solar Energy: Photovoltaics

In module three, we will explore the design, benefits and limitations of photovoltaic systems, gaining a solid understanding of photovoltaic cells and their functions.

Module 04: Wind Energy

In module four, we will learn about the characteristics of wind energy and how electricity is generated by wind turbines. We will also familiarise with the different types of wind turbines, offshore wind energy and wind farms.

Module 05: Bioenergy

In module five, we will broaden our knowledge of biogas, and its resources and types, as well as take a look at the principles of biogas technology. It also provides essential information on biofuel and its classifications.

Module 06: Geothermal Energy

In module six, we will familiarise with the different types of geothermal plants, comparing them to other plants, as well as take a look at their benefits and limitations.

Module 07: Tidal Energy

In module seven, we will explore the components of tidal power systems, as well as learn the differences between tidal energy and wave energy, including their benefits and limitations.

Module 08: Environmental Impacts: A Global and Regional Assessment

In module eight, we will deepen our understanding of the environmental impacts of each source of sustainable energy, and the different ways in which they can be used to create a more environmentally-friendly planet.

Module 09: Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development

In module nine, we will learn more about the two-way relationship between sustainable development and renewables, including barriers and opportunities. It also discusses energy indicators of sustainable development.

Module 10: The Future of Renewable Energy in the UK into the 2020s and Beyond

In this final module, we will take an in-depth look at the drivers of technological change, and the sustainable choices we can make for the future. It also provides important information UK programme successes, limits and policy influences.
