This module explores the meaning of grief and bereavement, including common emotional, psychological, and behavioural responses to loss. Learners will examine how grief can affect people differently depending on personal experiences, culture, and relationships.
Module 03: Attitudes Towards ‘Death’ and ‘Dying’
Understanding attitudes toward death and dying is essential in counselling and support work. This module examines personal, cultural, and societal perspectives surrounding death, as well as the emotional impact these beliefs may have on grieving individuals and families.
Module 04: What Happens When We Die
This module discusses emotional, social, and practical aspects associated with death and end-of-life experiences. Learners will gain insight into how individuals and families may respond during these difficult moments and how support services can provide guidance and reassurance.
Module 05: Depression Related to Grief and Bereavement
Grief can sometimes contribute to emotional distress and depression. In this module, learners will explore the connection between bereavement and mental wellbeing, including signs of grief-related depression and the importance of emotional support and early intervention.

Completion of these education programs does not automatically grant competency to act as a certified psychotherapist; it is designed for grief support, education, or to enhance existing professional skills.
To complete the Death, Dying and Bereavement certificate, you must take a minimum of 84 course hours. You may complete the courses in any order, but it is strongly recommended that you take the Foundations of Grief workshop first if you do not have previous training or experience in this field.
Becoming a grief counsellor usually requires a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or counselling, followed by a master’s degree for advanced practice. Many also complete a diploma in counselling or bereavement support and gain supervised practical experience through internships. In Canada, certification or registration with a professional counselling body may also be required depending on the province.
