To complete the Death, Dying and Bereavement certificate, you must take a minimum of 84 course hours. You may complete the courses in any order, but it is strongly recommended that you take the Foundations of Grief workshop first if you do not have previous training or experience in this field.
Becoming a grief counsellor usually requires a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or counselling, followed by a master’s degree for advanced practice. Many also complete a diploma in counselling or bereavement support and gain supervised practical experience through internships. In Canada, certification or registration with a professional counselling body may also be required depending on the province.
