Course Curriculum
Start with the fundamentals of asbestos, including what it is and why it can present a workplace hazard. Learners develop a foundation for recognising the importance of asbestos awareness in Canadian workplaces.
This section focuses on identifying asbestos-containing materials and understanding where they may be encountered. It helps learners recognise potential asbestos risks before work or maintenance activities begin.
Explore the legal side of asbestos management, including workplace responsibilities and safety requirements in Canada. Learners gain awareness of why appropriate controls, records, training, and procedures matter.
Attention turns to the factors that can increase asbestos exposure risk. Learners consider how material condition, disturbance, work activities, and workplace conditions can affect potential exposure.
Learn how asbestos surveys and risk assessments contribute to safer workplace planning. The content introduces the role of identifying ACMs and assessing the potential risks before work begins.
Safe working practices take centre stage as learners explore ways to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure. The module develops awareness of appropriate precautions, controls, and workplace safety measures.
Learners examine the safe management and disposal of asbestos-containing waste. The focus is on understanding why asbestos waste requires controlled handling and appropriate disposal procedures.
The final module addresses what can happen when asbestos-containing materials are accidentally disturbed. Learners explore emergency awareness, immediate safety considerations, and the importance of following workplace procedures.
FAQ
Asbestos may still be present in older Canadian homes, commercial buildings, workplaces, and other structures. It has been used in materials such as insulation, pipe coverings, flooring products, and other building components.
An asbestos risk assessment evaluates the potential risk of exposure from asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Under federal requirements, a qualified person assesses factors such as the type and amount of asbestos and the proposed work to determine the level of risk.
Training requirements depend on the province or territory, workplace, and type of asbestos-related work. Canadian requirements can include asbestos hazard awareness training, while higher-risk asbestos work may require additional training or qualifications.
No. Asbestos removal and other higher-risk activities should be carried out by appropriately trained and qualified workers following the requirements that apply to the jurisdiction and work. Canadian guidance states that qualified personnel should handle or remove asbestos-containing materials.
If asbestos-containing material is accidentally disturbed, workers should follow their workplace asbestos procedures, avoid actions that could spread fibres, and notify the appropriate supervisor or responsible person. Canadian asbestos management guidance includes procedures for accidental disturbance and emergencies.
No. Asbestos awareness training helps workers recognise asbestos hazards and understand safe workplace procedures. Asbestos abatement training is intended for workers carrying out specific asbestos-related work and may have additional provincial or territorial requirements.
