A single supportive conversation can change the direction of a young person’s life. Across Canada, youth workers play an important role in helping young people navigate challenges related to education, mental health, social pressure, family difficulties, community safety, and personal development. This course is designed to introduce learners to the foundations of youth work and the real-world responsibilities involved in supporting young people in modern communities.
The course explores youth work methods, communication approaches, legal responsibilities, social influences, and mental health support strategies used in youth services and community programs. Learners will also gain insight into how youth work connects with social work, rehabilitation services, and criminal justice support systems in Canada.

In module one, we will gain an in-depth understanding of what youth work entails and why it is so important. We will also explore the different types of youth work and approaches to youth work.
In module two, we will develop our understanding of the role and responsibilities of a youth worker and the foundations of youth work. It includes the skills and characteristics required to work successfully with young people in a social care setting.
In module three, we will gain an insight into youth development work as a profession, taking a look at youth work practice in various settings. It also covers youth work methods and key approaches.
In module four, we will learn about the legal responsibilities of a youth worker, exploring ethical codes of conduct in youth work, value and principles, empowerment, and how to establish boundaries.
In module five, we will gain a deeper insight into youth work as a career and the employment opportunities in this field. It covers salary and demand for a social worker, education, and career progression.
In module six, we will take a look at social change in youth development work and the three levels in which it can occur. It also explores the key ideas of Brazilian philosopher and educator Paulo Freire.
In module seven, we will learn about the core competencies of mental health practice, exploring a wide range of common mental health disorders and their treatment and classification.
In this final module, we will gain a comprehensive understanding of social welfare policy in criminal justice, exploring the components of the criminal justice system. Key topics include juvenile detention and correctional facilities.
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification in Canada, developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), trains individuals to provide initial support to someone experiencing mental health decline or crisis. The 12-hour, nationally recognized course covers stigma, disorders (anxiety, substance use, mood, psychosis), and crisis intervention (ALGEE framework).

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a 2 day in-depth mental health awareness course, approved by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). On completion of this training, candidates are certified as ‘Mental Health First Aiders’
This two-day course equips individuals with the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of mental ill-health and provide initial support. Mental Health First Aiders play a vital role in creating a workplace culture that promotes wellbeing and reduces stigma.
You can also complete a two-year MSW at some schools without a BSW with an honour degree (typically Social Science, but not required). PsyD (Doctorate of Psychology): Following a scientist-practitioner model, this degree tends to have a greater emphasis on training students to become clinicians/practitioners.
