Protect people, property, and public health with essential knowledge of Legionella control. This Legionella Awareness Training course helps you understand the risks, meet workplace safety responsibilities in Canada, and develop the confidence to manage water hygiene effectively.
Legionella bacteria can develop in poorly maintained water systems and cause serious illness, including Legionnaires’ disease. In Canada, workplaces and property owners must take steps to manage water hygiene and reduce potential risks.
This course introduces the causes of Legionella, how it spreads, and the environments where it is most likely to grow. You will gain practical awareness of risk factors in buildings such as offices, healthcare facilities, hospitality settings, and residential properties.
By the end of the course, you will understand how to identify potential hazards, support basic risk assessments, and apply preventative measures to help maintain safe and compliant water systems.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

Legionella Risk Assessment
Legionella is a type of bacteria that can grow in water systems and cause a serious lung infection known as Legionnaires’ disease.
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by inhaling small droplets of water contaminated with Legionella bacteria.
Legionella can develop in warm, stagnant water systems such as cooling towers, hot water tanks, plumbing systems, decorative fountains, and hot tubs.
Older adults, smokers, individuals with weakened immune systems, and people with chronic lung conditions are generally at higher risk.
It spreads through airborne water droplets (mist or vapour). It is not typically spread from person to person.
Legionella bacteria grow best in water temperatures between approximately 20°C and 45°C.
Prevention involves maintaining proper water temperatures, preventing water stagnation, cleaning systems regularly, and implementing water treatment and monitoring procedures.
Testing requirements can vary by province and industry, but employers are generally expected to manage water system risks under occupational health and safety regulations.
Symptoms may include cough, fever, muscle aches, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms are severe.
If contamination is suspected, building management should follow established safety procedures, conduct testing, implement control measures, and consult public health authorities where necessary.
