The introduction establishes the purpose of advanced asbestos awareness training and explains why effective management is important when asbestos-containing materials may be present. Learners are introduced to the responsibilities and risk-management principles developed throughout the course.

This module explores the composition and behaviour of asbestos fibres and how airborne fibres can create occupational health risks. Learners examine fibre behaviour, disease progression, comparisons with other workplace hazards, and the principles behind asbestos detection and sampling.

Learners examine the legal and regulatory responsibilities associated with asbestos management, including duty-holder and contractor responsibilities. UK-specific legislation such as the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and HSE enforcement is considered within its original context, while Canadian learners are directed to the applicable occupational health and safety and asbestos requirements in their jurisdiction.

This module focuses on managing asbestos risks during maintenance, refurbishment, and construction activities. Learners explore asbestos registers, working around presumed ACMs, containment and isolation, air monitoring, licensed or appropriately qualified contractors, and safe systems of work.

Learners develop knowledge of how asbestos-related disturbances and exposure events should be recorded and investigated. The module also explores long-term health monitoring, employer responsibilities where medical surveillance applies, and root-cause analysis to identify weaknesses in existing controls.

This module examines how asbestos awareness can become part of an organisation’s wider safety culture. Learners explore induction training, team awareness, refresher learning, safe behaviours, leadership responsibilities, and the importance of maintaining consistent risk-control practices.

Learners explore asbestos risks associated with confined spaces, heritage buildings, high-risk trades, and complex multi-contractor worksites. The module also examines the roles of asbestos surveyors, analysts, and other specialists and the importance of coordinating activities where multiple parties are involved.

The final module brings together the key principles covered throughout the course, including asbestos science, risk management, regulatory responsibilities, site controls, incident investigation, safety culture, and specialist coordination. Learners consolidate their understanding of the responsibilities involved in managing asbestos-related risks.
