This section sets the stage by showing how workplace safety is shaped by law. You’ll understand why health and safety rules exist, and how both employers and employees share responsibility in keeping work environments safe and legally compliant.
Here the focus shifts to how safety is actually organised inside a workplace. You’ll explore how planning, supervision, communication, and leadership come together to build a safety-first culture that works in real settings, not just on paper.
This module trains you to think like a safety observer. You’ll learn how hazards are identified before they cause harm and how everyday workplace risks—often overlooked—can be evaluated and controlled early.
This section looks at what happens when safety breaks down. You’ll explore how workplace accidents and health issues develop, and how they can affect not just individuals but also team performance and workplace stability.
When something goes wrong, response matters. This module explains how incidents are reported, examined, and followed up properly so that mistakes are understood and similar situations can be avoided in the future.
Here you’ll explore some of the most serious workplace hazards. The focus is on understanding how electrical systems, fire risks, and gas-related dangers occur—and what simple preventive steps can reduce those risks.
This section goes beyond awareness and looks at prevention in action. You’ll learn how fire safety systems, equipment, and workplace precautions work together to reduce the chance of fire emergencies.
When emergencies happen, clear action saves lives. This module explains how evacuation plans are designed, how alarms and routes are used, and how people are guided safely during fire situations.
This part focuses on preparation before emergencies occur. You’ll understand how fire plans are structured, who is responsible for what, and how workplaces maintain readiness for unexpected situations.
Here you’ll look at how everyday lifting, carrying, and movement tasks can lead to injuries. The module highlights strain-related problems and why proper handling matters in physical work environments.
This section focuses on prevention. You’ll explore how risk can be reduced through better planning, smarter work design, and the use of supportive tools and equipment.
In module 12, we’ll explore different techniques of safe lifting which are intended to reduce and avoid risks in manual handling.
Working above ground level introduces serious risks. This module explains those risks clearly and shows what safety responsibilities must be followed when using ladders, platforms, or scaffolding.
Here you’ll get familiar with equipment used for elevated tasks. The focus is on safe use, proper inspection, and understanding how equipment condition directly affects worker safety.
This section explores environments with limited entry and exit. You’ll understand why confined spaces are dangerous and how legal rules are designed to protect workers in such conditions.
This module focuses on reducing risk in restricted environments. You’ll learn about ventilation, monitoring, safety checks, and other controls that help make confined work safer.
When things go wrong in tight spaces, response must be quick and structured. This module explains rescue planning and emergency steps used to handle confined space incidents.
Not every workplace is the same. This section explores how safety practices change across offices, construction sites, warehouses, healthcare environments, and industrial workplaces.
This module focuses on machinery and tools used at work. You’ll learn how equipment can become dangerous and how regular checks and safe use reduce the chance of accidents.
Beyond obvious risks, workplaces also have hidden hazards like noise, stress, slips, and environmental factors. This section helps you recognise and understand these less visible dangers.
This module introduces simple first-response actions during workplace injuries. You’ll learn how quick, calm reactions can help reduce harm before medical help arrives.
Here you’ll focus on everyday injuries such as cuts, burns, and strains. The module explains how to respond safely and support recovery in common workplace situations.
When urgent help is needed, communication is critical. This section teaches how to contact emergency services clearly and provide the right information without confusion.
This module explains how exposure to harmful substances can affect health over time. It highlights common risks found in different workplaces and their potential impact.
Here you’ll learn how to recognise dangerous materials using labels, symbols, and workplace warnings. Understanding identification is the first step toward prevention.
This section focuses on keeping exposure under control. You’ll explore how workplaces monitor hazards and apply safety systems to maintain safe working conditions.
The final module brings everything together by showing how safety systems are actually put into practice, monitored over time, and improved to maintain consistent workplace protection.
Participants often need to be at least 16 years old, though some provinces require workers to be 19 to act as a designated attendant in the workplace.
These certifications usually require renewal every three years.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends following five actionable steps to conduct an effective risk assessment.
Step 1: Identify Hazards.
Step 2: Assess the Risks.
Step 3: Control the Risks.
Step 4: Record your Findings.
Step 5: Review the Controls.
Health & Safety. This Level 3 qualification provides learners with a range of essential health and safety knowledge and competence, including how to comply with health and safety requirements in the workplace, identify and reduce risks and hazards, control operations safely and conduct risk assessments of a workplace.
The Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) and Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designations are highly recognized in the Occupational Health and Safety profession in Canada and open up more opportunities for professionals in the occupational health and safety (OHS) field.
